2018 Mid-Year Update: Volatile Returns

So far, 2018 has been a year of ups and downs. Financial markets started the year off at a blistering pace with the S&P 500 and global stocks (MSCI All Country World Index) up 5.7% and 5.4%, respectively, in the month of January. However, in February we experienced the largest market correction in two years as the S&P 500 dropped 10.1% from its market highs. Since then, markets have struggled to regain the momentum shown towards the end of 2016 and all of 2017 as fears of trade wars and tariffs hampered returns. U.S. small cap is the top asset class year-to-date, while managed futures and most value stocks are struggling in negative territory (see value stocks discussion). Despite markets not finding themselves far from where they started the year, there still remains optimism for the U.S. economy which is firing on all cylinders.

Approaching Zero Taxes

Sir John Templeton once said, “For all long‐term investors, there is only one objective – maximum total return after taxes.” We could not agree more with this statement. Traditionally, the investment industry has focused on measures of risk and return while ignoring the tax implications of investing processes. In an effort to address this shortcoming, Savant continuously emphasizes tax-efficient investment strategies.

Market Update – June 2018

June was a month with mixed results for stocks as international stocks were down across the board while U.S. stocks were positive. Results were slightly positive among bonds, with short- and intermediate-term bonds essentially flat while international bonds posted a gain of 0.5% for the month.

Brexit: Then, Now, and What’s to Come

On June 23, 2016 British voters stunned politicians and investors alike by choosing to leave the European Union (EU). The narrow victory hammered stocks around the globe as the S&P 500 dropped 5.3% and the FTSE 100, measuring U.K. stocks, plunged 5.6% over their next two trading sessions. Legislators and economists, among other influencers, insisted that Brexit may be the wrench in the synchronized global growth story. So with the benefit of watching this story play out for almost two years, what do we know now and what can we expect?

Market Update – May 2018

Global stocks eked out a gain of 0.4% in May, with U.S. stocks pulling all of the weight. U.S. small stocks were the top performer – gaining 6.1%! Results were mixed among bonds, but U.S. bonds managed marginal, positive returns. Despite continued global growth, stock and bond markets have had trouble gaining traction in 2018, resulting in mostly flat returns.
